The Legend of the St Bridget Cross

As a pagan Chieftain lay dying, St Bridget was ask to sit by him and comfort him in his final hours.

While sitting with him she picked some rushes and began to weave them into a cross

The Chieftain asked her what she was making and St Bridget explained the story of Jesus to him.

Before passing the pagan Chieftain converted to Christianity

The Tradition

It is believed that the cross protects the home from fire, evil and hunger

also

The Brat Bhride (Brigid's Cloak) this is a piece of cloth, shawl, ribbon, handkerchief or scarf that is spread over a bush, gate or on a window sill on January 31st the eve of St Brigid's day so she can bless it and brought back in before sunrise on February 1st. It's believed she blesses it and gives it healing and protective qualities, which is used to help ease headaches, sore throats and illness throughout the year. It would be used during child birth
