A New Lease of Life for the Fosse

17/06/2026

There was a real sense of excitement on King's Island recently as the newly completed Fosse
was officially opened by Mayor John Moran.
What was once an overlooked area and just right outside our gate, beside the historic city walls
has been transformed into a welcoming green space that brings together local history, nature,
and community spirit. The project is a wonderful example of what can happen when people
work together with a shared vision for their area.
The Fosse has been designed to be enjoyed by everyone. Children can learn about nature and
the environment through exploration and play, while local residents and visitors can enjoy a
peaceful space right in the heart of the community. Native plants and flowers have been added
to encourage wildlife and pollinators, helping to create a vibrant and living space for years to
come.
Behind the scenes, the project is also helping the environment by improving how rainwater is
managed and filtered naturally. It will even serve as a test site for bat-friendly lighting, showing
how small changes can make a big difference for local wildlife.
We are particularly proud that our centre was involved in the project from the beginning and will
continue to play a role in its future. The Fosse provides a wonderful outdoor space for learning,
meeting, and connecting with nature. It reflects many of the values we promote every day —
inclusion, lifelong learning, wellbeing, and community participation.
The opening day was a celebration not only of a beautiful new space, but of the partnerships
that made it possible. Seeing local organisations, residents, and public representatives come
together was a reminder of the strength and pride that exists within our community.
As the plants grow and the space becomes established, we look forward to seeing the Fosse
become a much-loved feature of King's Island — a place where people of all ages can learn,
relax, and enjoy the outdoors together.
